Is XBT being used as money? The rails are ready, the spending isn’t yet
"If Bitcoin ends up just being digital gold, it is a failed project." That line from Jack Dorsey went around this weekend, and it's the question XBT has to answer too. So we checked: is anyone actually using XBT as money? The short answer is that it's cheap and the rails are being built, but real spending is still small.

The scorecard
| What we found | Verdict | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to send | 1 sat/vB fees. The median XBT-only transaction paid about 480 sats, around a third of a cent. | Ready |
| On-chain activity | About 38,000 transactions a day, but about 93% are copies of bitcoin transactions. Roughly 2,600 a day are XBT-only. | Small |
| What the XBT-only transactions look like | Mostly small. The median moved about 0.005 XBT (around $2.70), and more than half were under 0.01 XBT. | Payment-sized |
| Lightning | 51 nodes, 521 channels, about 56 XBT of capacity, median fee 10 ppm. | Growing |
| Peer-to-peer trading | Roblosats launched Oct 15: buy or sell XBT over Lightning with no account. | New |
| Merchants | Zero verified listings in our directory so far. | Not yet |
| Exchange trading | About 1,400 to 1,900 XBT a day on tracked venues. | The main use today |
What it means
The money rails work. Sending XBT on chain costs a fraction of a cent, and the Lightning network has grown to 51 nodes with new channels opening every day. Builders are shipping wallets, coinjoin, an explorer and now a no-account way to trade.
Most activity isn't XBT being used. About 93 in 100 transactions are bitcoin moves copied to XBT, because the two chains share pre-fork coins and keys. Why that happens. Strip those out and you're left with a few thousand native transactions a day.
The native ones look like payments, not vaults. They're small: half moved less than about $2.70. That could be people testing, tipping, splitting coins or paying each other. It's not big holders parking value.
Nobody is selling coffee for XBT yet, at least nowhere we've verified. Today, XBT is mostly something people trade, with a small, real layer of native use growing underneath.
What would change the answer
- Merchants. Even a handful of real businesses taking XBT would be a first. Know one? Submit it.
- Bridges. A Lightning bridge already lets you pay shops that only take bitcoin with XBT. How it works
- Easy Lightning wallets that work on the BLAKE2b chain, so a payment takes seconds, not a setup guide.
- More replay-protected spending, so XBT moves on its own instead of riding along with bitcoin transactions.
We'll rerun these numbers each month and track whether native use grows.
Where to spend XBTRoblosats: P2P trading
Method: 144 blocks to block 978,036 for transaction counts; a sample of 538 non-coinbase transactions from 24 of those blocks checked against mempool.space (93.1% confirmed on bitcoin too; likely range 91% to 95%); fees from the same sample. Lightning figures from Nodex (nodex.kilombino.com), Oct 19, 2026. Price about $535. Not financial advice.
