You can already buy lunch with XBT at shops that only take bitcoin
No shop needs to accept XBT for you to spend it. On Oct 18, XBT supporter Chris Guida posted a video of himself buying lunch with XBT from a Lightning wallet, at a place that only takes bitcoin. The trick is a Lightning bridge, and it's simpler and safer than it sounds.

How it works
- The merchant shows a normal bitcoin Lightning invoice (the kind that starts with lnbc). Nothing changes on their side.
- You pay it from an XBT Lightning wallet through a bridge node that has channels on both networks.
- The bridge pays the merchant in bitcoin and collects your XBT.
The key detail: both Lightning networks use the same kind of payment lock and the same payment hash. So the bridge holds your XBT payment and pays the merchant using the same hash. Both legs settle together or fail together. The bridge can't take your XBT without paying the merchant, and you never hand anyone your coins in between.
What it costs
The bridge quotes an exchange rate and takes a spread. In the open-source bridge software (lightning-fork-bridge), the default spread runs from 1% when flow is balanced to 3% when everyone is swapping the same direction, with a discount for swaps that rebalance it. Operators can set their own policy, so check the quote before you pay. Lightning routing fees on top are tiny.
Who runs bridges
On Nodex, the XBT Lightning explorer, bridge-related nodes include Paperclip Bridge and Lightning Fork Swap. Kilombino's Kilobridge is a non-custodial web front end for paying bitcoin Lightning invoices with XBT. More on Kilombino's tools
The catches
- Liquidity: a bridge can only pay out as much bitcoin as it holds. Big payments may be refused.
- It's new. The software is young and few bridges exist. Start with lunch-sized amounts.
- You need an XBT Lightning wallet with a channel, which is still more setup than a regular wallet.
Why it matters
On Monday we found that no merchants are verified as accepting XBT yet. Bridges change that math. Every shop that already takes bitcoin over Lightning is, in practice, a place you can spend XBT, as long as a bridge has liquidity. That's the fastest path from "the rails are ready" to "people are spending it."
