Why most bitcoiners haven't looked at XBT yet

Five reasons bitcoiners have not looked at XBT

Everyone who held bitcoin before the August 8 split also holds the same amount of XBT, at the same addresses. Most of them have never checked. That isn't because the coins are hard to find. It's because looking at XBT properly takes time, the usual tools don't show it, and the first wrong move can cost real bitcoin. Here's why so few have looked, and how to look safely in about 15 minutes.

Card listing five reasons most bitcoiners haven't looked at XBT: they don't know they hold it, their wallet can't show it, it takes time to understand, it carries a social cost, and the first move is risky

1. They don't know they hold it

A chain split copies every balance. If you held bitcoin at block 961,631, the keys you still control also hold XBT. There's no airdrop email, no claim page and no exchange banner telling you. Unless someone mentions it, nothing happens. What XBT is

2. Their wallet can't show it

Regular bitcoin wallets and block explorers reject XBT's blocks, because XBT moved to BLAKE2b proof of work. Open your usual wallet and you'll see your bitcoin and nothing else. Seeing XBT takes an XBT wallet such as Shrike connected to an XBT server or your own node. Most people never get that far. How to check your balance

3. It takes time to understand

XBT exists because of a fight over rules: BIP-110's limits on data, a user-activated soft fork, miners who didn't go along, and a proof-of-work change to keep the rules. Following that takes hours, not minutes, and most people who own bitcoin check the price chart, not the mailing lists. Without the background, "a fork" sounds like every fork before it.

4. There's a social cost

Most bitcoin companies, exchanges and big accounts treat XBT as a fake chain or ignore it. Asking about it in the wrong room gets you mocked. For a lot of people, that settles it before they've looked at a single block.

5. The first move is risky

This is the real reason to be careful. XBT's replay protection is opt-in, so a transaction made the wrong way can be valid on both chains. People have moved bitcoin by accident while trying to move XBT, and typing a seed into an unfamiliar wallet is how most fork scams work. Waiting is often the right call. Waiting forever because nobody explained it isn't. Replay protection, explained

How to look safely in 15 minutes

  1. Don't move anything. Looking is safe. Sending is where people lose money.
  2. Never type your seed into anything new. Use a watch-only wallet with your xpub, or your hardware wallet.
  3. Check your balance with Shrike and an XBT Electrum server. Step-by-step guide
  4. Read about replay protection before you split or sell anything. Guide
  5. Avoid the common mistakes. Six that cost people XBT

If you hold bitcoin for family, add one line to your inheritance notes: the same keys also hold XBT. Heirs who only check bitcoin may never know.

Life support

So the patient was moved to the emergency room. In August, the SHA-256 miners left on their own chain, and the nodes enforcing BIP-110's rules kept going without them. At the end of the month, the rule-keeping chain switched its mining to BLAKE2b so the captured SHA-256 hash couldn't take it over. That chain is XBT. The full story is in How Bitcoin kept its rules and moved to BLAKE2b.

Patients on life support don't look healthy, and XBT doesn't either. About 102 XBT buy one BTC. It has had three bear markets in six weeks. That's what a rescue looks like from the outside. The people in the ER right now, the node runners, the miners, the builders shipping wallets and pools every week, are doing the work while the outcome is anything but certain. If the patient makes it, they're the ones who saved it.

The strangest part: you already own it

If you held bitcoin before Aug 8, 2026, you hold XBT. Same coins, same addresses, same keys. The proof of work that secured your coins for 17 years secures them on both chains, because the history is identical up to block 961,631. Every UTXO that existed before the split exists on XBT. The XBT you hold cost you exactly what your BTC cost you.

Since the split, the two histories have gone different ways. XBT's blocks follow BIP-110's rules: less data that isn't money, a cleaner chain going forward. Not sure what you hold? Check an address.

Two places at once

So where is Bitcoin right now? In a sense, it's in two places.

The body is still on the old chain: the brand, the network effect, the exchange listings, the ticker everyone knows. That doesn't disappear overnight, and we won't pretend it does.

But the thing that made Bitcoin worth caring about was never the brand. It was the idea: money that no state, no company and no small group of operators can change on users without their consent. That idea now lives on the chain whose users enforced their rules when it mattered. The body stayed. The soul moved.

Bitcoin was always a quiet way to separate money from the state. It still is. It just lives somewhere new.

Opinion. Not financial advice. XBT trades on thin markets and can lose most of its value quickly. Price figures as of the evening of Oct 10, 2026 (US Eastern).
