How to Buy XBT (BTCB2): Step by Step
Short version: get BTC or USDC, send it to an exchange that lists XBT, buy with a limit order, then withdraw to your own XBT wallet. The first time takes about an hour, mostly waiting for confirmations.
What you need
- BTC or USDC to pay with
- An account on an exchange that lists XBT. NeoxEX has the most volume. See Where to Buy for all venues and live prices.
- An XBT wallet that supports the BLAKE2b chain
- An authenticator app for two-factor login
The steps
- Get BTC or USDC. If you already own Bitcoin, you can use it. If not, buy BTC on an app you trust, such as Coinbase, Kraken, Strike, River or Cash App. BTC is usually the better choice because the XBT/BTC market has the most volume.
- Set up an XBT wallet. Install a wallet that supports the BLAKE2b chain, such as Shrike or the Sparrow BLAKE2b build. Write the recovery words on paper, then copy a receive address. You'll need it in step 6.
- Open a NeoxEX account. Sign up at neoxa.exchange and turn on two-factor login (an authenticator app, not SMS) before you deposit anything.
- Deposit BTC or USDC. On NeoxEX, open Deposit and copy the BTC address (or the USDC address on the network you'll use). Send from your exchange or wallet. For USDC, the network must match exactly on both sides.
- Buy XBT with a limit order. Open the XBT/BTC, XBT/USDC or XBT/USDT market. Place a limit order near the best ask instead of a market order. The books are thin, and a market order can fill several percent worse than the price you see.
- Withdraw to your own wallet. Choose XBT (listed as BTCB2 on some screens), paste your XBT wallet address and send a small test first. Once it shows up in your wallet, send the rest.
The one mistake that loses coins: XBT and Bitcoin addresses look the same. Never send XBT to a Bitcoin address or exchange wallet, and never send BTC to an XBT deposit address. Before every deposit or withdrawal, check that the network says Bitcoin BLAKE2b (or BTCB2).
Already held Bitcoin before August 8, 2026?
You may already own XBT. Bitcoin held at the fork block 961,632 exists on both chains. The safe order is:
- Move your BTC first to a brand new Bitcoin wallet you control.
- Then import the old recovery words into an XBT wallet to see and move the XBT side.
Doing it in this order means nothing you do on the XBT chain can put your BTC at risk. Never type recovery words into a website.
Common mistakes
- Using market orders. Thin order books mean a market order can fill far from the quoted price. Use limit orders.
- Mixing up tickers. The same coin trades as XBT, BTCB2 or BIP110. On Kraken, "XBT" means regular Bitcoin. Tokens called XBT on other blockchains are not this coin.
- Leaving coins on the exchange. Small exchanges can pause withdrawals or fail. Withdraw when you're done trading.
- Skipping the test transaction. Send a small amount first every time you use a new address.
Questions
Can I buy XBT with a credit card?
Not directly in most places. Buy BTC with your card on a regular app, send it to an exchange that lists XBT, then trade it for XBT.
Do I need to verify my ID?
It depends on the exchange. NonKYC does not ask for ID. Check NeoxEX's current rules when you sign up.
Is XBT on Kraken the same coin?
No. On Kraken and other big platforms, XBT is the old ticker for regular Bitcoin. The Bitcoin BLAKE2b coin is not listed on large exchanges.
Do I owe tax when I buy?
Buying is usually not taxable, but selling, trading and mining income can be. The xbt.live tax page gives you a daily fair market value for your records.
Did I get XBT if I held Bitcoin before August 8, 2026?
Probably. Coins held at the fork block 961,632 exist on both chains. Move your BTC to a new wallet first, then import the old recovery words into an XBT wallet.
Risks
XBT is a young minority fork with thin liquidity, few exchanges and an active governance debate. Prices have swung more than 80% in a few weeks. Only put in what you can afford to lose.
