XBT vs BTCB2 vs Bitcoin BLAKE2b: are they the same coin?
Yes: XBT, BTCB2 and Bitcoin BLAKE2b are the same coin. Different exchanges list it under different tickers. Here's what each name means, why there are several, and the one mix-up that can cost you money: on some big exchanges, "XBT" means regular bitcoin.
The short version
| Name | What it is | Where you'll see it |
|---|---|---|
| XBT | The community's ticker for Bitcoin BLAKE2b | NeoxEX (XBT/USDC, XBT/USDT, XBT/BTC), xbt.live, most wallets and posts |
| BTCB2 | Same coin, exchange ticker | NonKYC (BTCB2/USDT), some trackers |
| Bitcoin BLAKE2b | The full name: the chain and its coin | Software, node names, articles |
| BIP110 | Same coin, another exchange ticker | SafeTrade |
Where the coin came from
On Aug 8, 2026, at block 961,632, the large SHA-256 miners left the chain that was enforcing the BIP-110 rules. That chain kept going, and on Aug 30 it switched its mining from SHA-256 to BLAKE2b. The SHA-256 chain the big miners kept still trades as BTC. Because both chains share the same history up to Aug 8, anyone who held bitcoin before then also holds the same amount of XBT. Watch out: "XBT" on Kraken and BitMEX is bitcoin
Long before this fork, some big exchanges used XBT as their code for regular bitcoin. Kraken's internal pair names and BitMEX's XBTUSD contracts are the best-known examples. On those platforms, XBT means BTC, not Bitcoin BLAKE2b. Before you buy, sell or send anything labeled XBT, check which chain the exchange actually means. If it doesn't mention BLAKE2b, assume it's bitcoin.
Same keys, two chains
- Pre-fork coins: the same private keys control your coins on both chains. To move the XBT, use a wallet built for the BLAKE2b chain, like Shrike.
- Replay risk: XBT's replay protection is opt-in, so a plain bitcoin-style transaction can sometimes be copied onto the other chain. How replays work and how to avoid them.
- Split before you sell: How to claim and sell XBT safely.
